A Chalice
This strange piece of lead is part of a chalice used at Mass by Christians living at Vindolanda just after Britain ceased to be part of the Empire.
Now broken, it was probably made during the 5th Century. It is now on display at Vindolanda.
If you know what the letters mean get in touch with the people there because they are not yet understood!
BUT it is not the oldest liturgical chalice to have been found in this country.
In 1975 a hoard of silverware made during the 4th Century was found at Water Newton in Cambridgeshire.
It includes this chalice and other cups and dishes.
They can be seen in the British Museum.
