Have you seen it before?
This chalice has usually been kept at Saint Joseph’s Church in recent years.
It was commissioned sometime after the First World War and so most likely belonged to the parish of Saint Thomas of Canterbury in Port Clarence, founded in 1865 and the mother church for the Catholic community in this part of Teesside.
The underside is engraved with a Latin dedication which runs:
In memory of those who once lived in this parish and gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918
It is very appropriate that we use this chalice at Mass on Remembrance Sunday.
At this time we recall all those who gave their lives in the service of their country during the Great War, the Second World War and all the conflicts that have taken place since.
We pray for all those who died, for those injured and scarred by war; we pray for peace and a better understanding among the peoples of the world.
