What is the stone called?
This stone can be seen in an ancient church not far from Billingham.
Saint Michael’s Church in Heighington has some wonderful pieces that have survived since before the Reformation.
This stone is quite large and would have originally be laid flat.
It has 24 ‘pockets’ or stone receptacles in this criss-cross arrangement.
At one time stones like this with cup-like containers were common in churches.
Did you guess it? People did have a go, but there were no correct answers. Some very innovative tries!!
