Did you work it out?

The painting is of a girl fetching water from Saint Mary’s Well in Jesmond, Newcastle.

The photograph on the left shows the well after a clearing away of the bushes (it get’s very overgrown).

It is well known that Jesmond was a place of pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady during the Middle Ages.

All that remains is a ruined chapel and this well.

The arch has ‘Gratia’ carved into the stone

It is part of the Angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary:

‘Ave Gratia plena’

‘Hail, full of grace’
